Codex List

This page is derived from Table II from Corpus Christianorum Latinorum I. The codices which only contain the Apologeticum are listed elsewhere.

Lost codices are listed in red. However a lost codex is only listed if someone used it for an extant edition. The century in which the codex was written is noted, if known.

The table also contains the De trinitate of Novatian and the Adversus omnes haereses, a spurious work, as these are found in certain of the collections of Tertullian's works, and therefore their presence or absence is indicative of the history of that particular manuscript.

(+) = These works were printed by Beatus Rhenanus in his first edition using only the now lost Codex Hirsaugensis, and so are effectively a copy of that work for those works. He derived the other works in his edition from the Codex Paterniacensis.

2. This codex contains the treatise De fuga in persecutione twice. Cf A.Kroymann, as above, p. 10 and 23.

4. Vaticanus Latinus 189, 192 and 193 make up one codex, containing the whole Cluniacensis collection. Cf. Kroymann, as above, p. 4.

6. (From Addendum in Vol II).  Codex Vindobonensis graecus 64 (formerly 146) (from the end of the s. XIV) on f. 324r and 327v contains fragments of the Apologeticum (not however of De carne Christi as listed above) and chapter 5 in the version quoted in Eusebius.  The information was supplied to CCL by V.Bulhart.  I cannot determine from CCL whether this is in Greek or Latin - is this anything more than an extract from Eusebius?
7. (From CTC 1986, §11, reviewing Duval, Yves-Marie, Sur la bibliographie et les manuscrits d'Arnobe de Sicca : les informations de Jerome, leur sens et leurs sources possibles, Latomus 45 (1986), pp.79-99.  P.91, n.81 refers to some MSS extant in Paris in 1652, following Oehler.  The catalogue includes among other rarities, "Tertulliani de pallio, aduersus gentes de spectaculis, de baptismo" (Ph. Labbe, Noua Bibliotheca Mss. librorum, Paris, apud I.Henault, 1653, p.372).
